Following its completion in 1983, ORV Sagar Kanya embarked on its maiden voyage from West Germany, arriving at Mormugao Harbour in Goa on , after a series of test research cruises. It was then delivered to the Ministry of Earth Sciences (then known as the Department of Ocean Development), marking the beginning of a new era for Indian oceanography.
