"Retribution" was, in many ways, the most video-game-like film in the franchise. The structure felt like a series of escalating levels, with Alice fighting her way through one themed arena after another. The film also saw the return of several characters, including fan-favorites Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) and Ada Wong (Li Bingbing), as well as Michelle Rodriguez’s character, Rain, re-introduced as a clone. While the plot was often criticized as nonsensical, the relentless action was a crowd-pleaser, and the film earned worldwide, keeping the series firmly in the blockbuster realm.

Apocalypse shifts the tone toward urban action. It introduces Nemesis, a towering, heavily armed bio-organic weapon programmed to hunt down the remaining S.T.A.R.S. members.
