Sofia's childhood was marked by tragedy. At just six years old, she nearly died during the Holodomor, the man-made famine that devastated Ukraine in the early 1930s. A few years later, as a teenager, she was among the millions of people forcibly taken by the Nazis to serve as forced laborers in Germany. In 1956, they were invited by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and emigrated to Chicago, USA. There, Sofia worked as a laundress while Mykhailo worked as an electrician.
