In communist-era Albania and well into the early 1990s, making a phone call wasn’t as simple as dialing a number. If you wanted to reach a government office, a state enterprise, or even a friend’s landline, you often had to go through a central telephone operator. But the numeratori had a more specific role: they were the human directory.

The main telephone exchange was located near what is today the intersection of and Rruga e Durrësit . Inside, rows of female operators (almost always women) sat at wooden desks with bulky headsets, patch cords, and endless lists of numbers. They knew Tirana’s infrastructure by heart — every ministry, clinic, school, and state-owned shop had a numeric code, and the numerators could recite hundreds from memory.
