Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health in the Horn of Africa. Many Oromo communities still rely on traditional frameworks for understanding distress, anxiety, depression, and trauma, but modern psychological knowledge can offer additional tools and insights. In a recent article published in Oromo, experts discussed how hormonal changes during adolescence can affect social life and mental health, concluding that psychological education is essential for young people to understand and cope with these challenges. Having a dedicated textbook on psychology in Oromo would allow teachers, social workers, and community health workers to discuss these topics accurately and sensitively, without relying on translated materials that may lose meaning in the process.
